The film is shown as part of the program ‘between worlds’ – a collaboration with A.G. Leventis Gallery in occasion of the exhibition of ‘Christoforos Savva: Simple – Complicated – Invinsible: An Uknown Archive’ (21.11.2025 – 28.06.2026).
In Stella (1955), directed by Michael Cacoyannis and starring Melina Mercouri, a popular nightclub singer in postwar Athens refuses to conform to social expectations of marriage and submission. When she becomes involved with a possessive football player who demands total commitment, Stella insists on maintaining her independence, even as the relationship grows increasingly volatile. Set against the urban landscape of 1950s Greece, the film blends melodrama with social critique, presenting a female protagonist who openly challenges patriarchal norms at a time when such defiance carried serious consequences. Considered a landmark of modern Greek cinema, Stella helped establish Mercouri’s international reputation and remains significant for its portrayal of autonomy, desire, and the cost of personal freedom within a rigid social framework.
