In Montparnasse 19 (1958), directed by Jacques Becker, the final years of Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani are portrayed through his struggles with poverty, illness, and artistic obsession in the bohemian milieu of early 20th-century Paris. Starring Gerard Philipe in one of his last roles, the film traces Modigliani’s turbulent relationship with Jeanne Hébuterne and his growing isolation as recognition remains elusive. Rather than romanticizing the myth of the “cursed artist,” the film presents creativity alongside fragility and self-destruction, set against the cafés and studios of Montparnasse. Released in 1958, it stands as one of Becker’s final works and is noted for its restrained direction and sober depiction of artistic life.
