Gaslight (1940)

4 March , 7:30 PM - 10 March , 9:30 PM

The film is shown as part of the program ‘between worlds’ – a collaboration with A.G. Leventis Gallery in occasion of the exhibition of ‘Christoforos Savva: Simple – Complicated – Invinsible: An Uknown Archive’ (21.11.2025 – 28.06.2026).

In Gaslight (1940), directed by Thorold Dickinson and based on the stage play by Patrick Hamilton, a young woman moves with her husband into a London house where a murder once took place. As strange incidents begin to occur) dimming lights, missing objects, unexplained noises from upstairs  (her husband insists that these events are imagined, gradually leading her to question her own sanity.

Released during World War II, the film is regarded as one of the key early psychological thrillers of British cinema and gave rise to the term “gaslighting,” now widely used to describe a form of psychological manipulation. Its success later led to the well-known 1944 American adaptation starring Ingrid Bergman, but the original British version remains a reference point for its restrained direction, atmospheric tension, and precise study of coercive control.
